What goes into a new concrete floor in Edmond?
Concrete floor installation in Edmond means clearing out the topsoil and soft ground, packing a firm base, and pouring a slab built for whatever flooring goes on top of it. At Modern Edmond Concrete, most of that planning happens before the first truck shows up.
Most folks call us about an addition, a shop or an old floor that's cracked and sinking, and if it's a garage you're after, our garage floor concrete page covers that. The price moves with the size of the floor, how much ground we have to dig out and replace, whether the slab needs a moisture barrier or steel in it, and how easy it is to get concrete to the spot. The schedule turns on the weather, any inspection the city wants before the pour, and curing, the wait while concrete hardens before you load it. I'll measure and give you your own number in writing.
How do you know it's time for a new concrete floor?
Cracks that keep widening
A crack that opens wider every year, or one side sitting higher than the other, usually means the ground under the slab has moved. Patching the top doesn't fix the ground, so the longer it goes, the more the floor breaks up around it.
Low spots and standing water
If water gathers in the same place every time you mop or it rains in, the floor has settled or was never poured flat. Water sitting there wears down the surface and gets into the walls and whatever you've stored on it.
Flooring that won't stay down
Tile that pops loose, glue that lets go or wood that cups often points to moisture coming up through the slab or a slab that's moving. New flooring over the same slab usually fails the same way.
How our concrete floor installation works, start to finish
Before anything else, I ask what flooring goes on top, because tile, wood or carpet changes how we build the slab, starting with whether it needs a moisture barrier underneath. Then our crew digs out the topsoil and soft spots down to firm ground, brings in base rock and packs it hard, since the subgrade, the ground the slab sits on, decides whether your floor stays flat. We set the forms, lay the barrier and any steel we've agreed on, and pour early in the day so the top doesn't dry out in the heat and turn dusty later. Once it's finished, we cut control joints, shallow cuts that give the concrete a straight line to crack along instead of wherever it pleases, and we keep the slab moist or seal it with a curing compound so it hardens slowly and evenly. If the budget has to give somewhere, I'd rather trim the finish than the base, because nobody sees the base once it's poured and it's the part that decides how the floor holds up.
Floors are one piece of the flatwork we do, the flat concrete in and around a house. Out back we build concrete pool decks, and when a new room or porch needs a way up to the door, we form concrete steps to go with it.
Smooth floor for flooring on top
This suits a room that's getting tile, wood or carpet, because we finish it flat and smooth and lay a moisture barrier under it when the flooring calls for one.
Bare concrete floor
This suits a shop, storage room or utility space where the concrete is the floor. We put more care into the finish and where the joints land, since they'll stay in plain view.
Broom finish floor
This suits a covered porch or a room that gets wet, because dragging a broom across the fresh surface leaves a light texture that gives your feet some grip.

What happens after you call about a concrete floor in Edmond?
Here's how a concrete floor goes from your first call to the final walk-through, and who you'll deal with along the way.
Call or send us a message
Call (405) 285-3167 or use the form, and we'll get back to you to set a time for me to come out.
I come out and measure
I look the site over, measure and listen to what you want, including what goes on top of the floor. Then I send a written estimate that spells out what's included, so you know what you're paying for before you agree to anything.
Sort permits, prep and pour
Once you say go, we sort out any permits with the city, set a date, then dig out and pack the base before we pour. Any slab inspection the city calls for happens before concrete goes in.
Walk the finished floor together
I walk the finished floor with you and go over when it's safe to walk on and when heavy furniture can come back in. You'll leave knowing what the slab needs over its first few weeks.
Why homeowners call Modern Edmond Concrete for a new floor
The owner looks at every job
I come out myself to look at every job and write the estimate, and a small crew I work alongside does the prep, forming, pouring and finishing. We're based in Edmond, so the person who measured your floor is right there when it's poured.
In business since 2021
I started this business in 2021 after years on other people's crews, and before that I was setting forms on the family farm. Out there you fixed a thing once and did it right, and that's still how I build a floor.
Covered while we're on your property
We're licensed and fully insured. That matters when a crew, a mixer truck and a fresh slab are all at your house.
What matters most on a floor is the ground under it, so that's where I spend the most time when I come out. Ask for an estimate or call (405) 285-3167.
Concrete floors, slab prep and inspections in Edmond
In Edmond, City of Edmond Development Services requires a slab inspection on new residential building permits, and it has to be approved before any concrete goes in. Whether your floor falls under that depends on the permit your project needs, so we check with the city before work starts, and when the city expects the contractor to handle it, we take care of the paperwork and line up the inspection. The city takes permit requests through its online permit portal, and plan review fees are paid when you apply. The inspection looks at the same packed base and moisture barrier we'd build under your floor regardless, so it doesn't change how we work.
We're glad to pour floors across the cities around Edmond, and the calls we get tend to be additions, shops and older slabs that have settled. We do the same base and moisture work on floors in Moore and Norman.
Questions about concrete floors in Edmond
Will my new concrete floor crack?
Probably a little, because all concrete tends to crack and a completely crack-free floor isn't possible. Wire mesh or other steel placed in the right spot won't stop cracks, but it can keep them narrower, and the control joints give them a planned line to follow. I'll tell you before we pour where cracks are most likely, so nothing surprises you.
How much does a concrete floor cost in Edmond, OK?
One Oklahoma City price guide puts a concrete slab at about $6 to $11 per square foot, not counting staining or stamping. In that same guide, reinforced slabs reach a higher top price than plain pads, and your own number also depends on how much ground has to come out and what goes under the slab. I'll measure and give you a written estimate for your floor.
When can we walk on a new concrete floor and move furniture back in?
A slab should be walkable within 48 hours, but concrete takes 28 to 30 days to fully cure. One price guide suggests waiting a week before heavier loads, so plan to bring the heavy furniture in after that.
What does Edmond's slab inspection check?
It looks at the slab's thickness, a vapor retarder between the slab and its base, and a compacted base of granular material, and the city notes that isn't the full list. We have the base packed and the barrier down by the time the inspector comes. Technical questions about it go to Development Services at 405-359-4780 or buildingadministration@edmondok.gov.
What is the best way to keep moisture from ruining flooring on a concrete slab?
Put a vapor retarder, a moisture barrier, under the slab, because industry guidance says a slab needs protection from moisture rising from below when carpet, tile, wood or similar flooring goes on it. Floors poured on a barrier can show some minor cracking, and the guidance treats that as a better risk than flooring that fails.
How long does a new concrete floor take to dry before flooring goes down?
Longer than it takes to harden, because much of the mixing water stays in the concrete and leaves slowly over the months after the pour. A slab that's hard enough to walk on can still be holding water, so talk with whoever lays your flooring about when they want to start.
Related concrete work around a new floor
If your project runs out past the back door to a pool, a deck poured on the same packed base keeps the surround flat and less slick underfoot.
When a new floor leaves a doorway sitting higher than the ground outside, poured concrete steps give you a solid, even way in and out.
